Every Day

Their shoulders touched. The wind moved her hair gently into his, entwining, and she knew she had to break the news now, in the peaceful moment.

"InuYasha, I have to go back home in a couple days."

"Huh? Why?"

She smiled. "It's my birthday. You can come as well, if you like."

"Why would I care about your birthday?"

She shrugged, and felt her shoulder move against the warmth of his. "I just thought you might want to celebrate with me, is all."

"Celebrate? What is there to celebrate?"

Her head snapped to her left, her eyes cutting blades through him. "Birthdays are a time to show a person that you don't take them for granted, that you're happy that they're alive."

"No one celebrates my birthday!" InuYasha snapped back.

"That's because I don't know when it is!"

"So what?"

"When is it?"

He turned a questioning gaze on her. "What do you mean, when is it?"

"What day were you born on?" Kagome's frustration was wearing through into her voice.

"I dunno."

"Oh." Kagome shrugged again and took the opportunity to lean into InuYasha's shoulder a bit harder. She wondered if it was a sheer cultural difference, or because InuYasha was an orphan, or because he was a hanyou, that he didn't know his birthday, but she decided not to ask. He wouldn't want to talk about it.

"It sounds stupid if you ask me," InuYasha whispered into the spring breeze.

"It's not stupid. It's always a good idea to let people know you don't take them for granted."

He looked up and their eyes caught, the gaze hard with a perilous intensity that Kagome had come to recognize as the real InuYasha trying to climb through, to form words from the emotions that he felt. "Kagome, I... I am always glad you are here, by me. I don't need a special day to remind me."

Her mouth fell open a little bit. InuYasha was so right. "InuYasha... I... I'm glad you were born, even if I don't know when that happened."

Their eyes held a moment longer, and they were so, so close that Kagome thought they might kiss. When she first felt InuYasha move, she expected exactly that and braced for it.

He flopped back onto his back in the grass, laying on his folded arms. "So you're not going to go back, then?"

Kagome's cheeks pinked up in embarrassment. How could she have thought they were going to kiss? That was so ridiculous of her. "I'm still going to go!"

"Keh, why?"

"It's my birthday. That's at least an excuse for gifts and a lot of good food and treats."

InuYasha looked up at her with wide, gold eyes. "Food?"

"Oh yes. My mama makes my favorite meal, and she buys me a very expensive cake in my favorite flavor, and also bakes me cookies."

InuYasha starred at her before answering. "I know when my birthday is."

"Every day."

Hehe, this has that nice comic beat at the end, but also a real moment of poignancy when IY says "I am always glad you are here, by me. I don't need a special day to remind me." Very sweet!

I'm very sorry. I honestly thought I'd replied to this.

Anyway, it was very sweet and I like IY's confusion on what a birthday is. I mean in the truest sense of the word he'd know what it means (birthday=date of birth obviously), but it's not something they really celebrated back then since they didn't have a way of knowing it outside the general vicinity so it makes sense he'd not know what she was celebrating.

Thank you. ♥
