Title: Reprise
Fandom: N/A, Original poem
Summary: Free verse. The subject matter is the esoteric: the search for answers to unanswerable questions. Rated G.
AN: Merry Christmas lolitaray! You asked for a poem and you didn't say what it ought to be about. Be careful what you wish for.

I applied my mind to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is but a chasing after wind. For in much wisdom is much vexation, and those who increase knowledge increase sorrow.
~ Ecclesiastes 1:17-18 (attributed to Solomon)

I love suites
   Or themes
Repeats in melody
Prose calling prose from deep in time

The way things rise again

I sat to write a suite
   For you
Without a rhyme
Resolutions put aside
In favor of reprise

People go to the ends of the world,
Build and mold their own gods,
But can still be reduced to animals.

But a moment will undo a moment's worth of choice
   Or not.

What, then, has its own enduring meaning
But the suite of arias, the congregations
Of single minds made mutual
In these connecting ties
Defying time and space-- Oh art!

I remember a lonely day I drank with Eliot,
A conversation with Emerson under a cherry tree
And many an argument with Solomon or Hobbes

With them I touch the old song:
Man, hope, death--
I pull them from the air
Puzzles yet unsolved
And unresolved, unsolvable.

To dwell in vain futility
And here find awkward respite,
To revel in the chasing after wind
That others, greater, have yet chased--
Died they of fatigue before your birth--
This, the curse, is the artist's choice

Or worse, to solve the endless
Riddles, plain in
black and white to find
The sole one who can read them is yourself.
Defeat, art thou clothed in victory!

I sat to write a happy piece
   For you, to pen allegro
In the key of C, a score for
Harpsichord and lute.

Instead, my dear, I've written here
A canon of our reckless dreams
Of grandiuer, a fugue full formed of
Empty conversations with the dead

But also this-- an aria di bravura
--At which I've failed in execution--
About something, I am sure

I simply have not yet determined what.

God Jess, this was simply amazing.

I seriously have like taken about half an hour to read it over and gets little bits that just keep on shifting and forming differently.

I didn't request what I wanted it to be about because I wanted it to be your choice, entirely. :)

But a moment will undo a moment's worth of choice
Or not.

I love your poetry. Thank you so much, dearest. *huggles*
