Chapter 6

The cherry wood door in the bronze brick wall swung open with the sort of creak one expects from solid wood. Heath watched Jake with wonder as Jack held the key in his mouth to hold the door and peer into the foyer. Heath leaned around his shoulder to look in.

The vision before his eyes was plain enough: old brick painted white, a red runner lining hardwood stairs, a row of metal mailboxes bearing only numbers.

"Lesth go," Jake lisped around his mouthful of keys. Heath smiled fondly at Jake's tendency to put things in his mouth. It wasn't something Jack used to do, that he could remember, except cigarettes. Jake used to smoke, but he'd quit. Maybe that was why he was always putting something in his mouth, but Heath doubted it. The habit seemed like one Jake might have cultivated much earlier in life. They weren't who they'd been before, not entirely. They truly were some combination.

Jake stuffed the keys into a tight denim pocket and ascended the dark stairwell, his right hand clenching hard onto the wooden railing. "It'll be alright," Heath said, his voice echoing.

Jake made a noise, but it didn't sound convinced. He hadn't even asked Heath how his meeting with Michelle had gone or what had really been decided. When Heath had left that door, Jake had simply looked at him with big, blue, curious eyes, Heath nodded, and before Heath knew it they were talking about finding their way over to Maggie and Peter's. And now, here they were.

Jake paused outside the door and turned, but didn't look at Heath. His fingers move in the air, holding nothing, flicking nothing, craving something. Heath caught them between two of his own needy fingers.

"What's up?" Heath's voice echoed again, and he worried that others could hear him, that Maggie and Peter could hear him, that everyone in the goddamn apartment building could hear him. He cringed and pulled his cap down lower with his other hand.

Jake squeezed Heath's hand and wrestled his own free. "How'd it go?" he asked.

Damned stupid time to have this conversation, Heath thought. He wanted to say so. He froze, not speaking, feeling the tension of a hallway of ears. Jake's calm blue eyes took a turn towards the melancholy and he nodded once before knocking on the door-- another large wooden fixture mimicking the one downstairs.

Heath cursed inwardly, knowing that what he'd done, that freezing in the hallway thing-- well, at least he knew that melancholy blue, and it was an eye color that had never belonged to Jake.

The door swung open before Heath could fix the situation, though. Maggie's Caribbean azure smiled across at them, but she could not, despite her abilities as an actor, disguise her worry for her little brother. Or maybe she wasn't trying. "Come in," she smiled.

She was about seven months pregnant, and the look suited her. Though Heath truly thought pregnancy suited most women. Ennis had thought that too, hadn't he? Oh yeah, he definitely had. Something about a woman plump with a man's child was reassuring, a reminder that everything was running as it should in a world that Ennis was trying to find the ups and downs of. Maggie's cheeks had a natural blush and Peter, entering the room, had a notified strut to his step: pride. Heath remembered well the feelings of the days and weeks and months before becoming a real-life father.

"What's wrong?" Maggie always was one to cut to the chase. Everyone ignored her for a moment to undergo the formalities of introductions: hellos, handshakes, claps on the backs. None for Maggie, though, as she stood defensively, eyes narrowed at her brother. "You said it was an emergency."

Oh. So that was what Jake'd said to make Maggie worry so.

"Let's, uh, sit down," Jake suggested, already seeming to be looking and acting considerably younger in this situation.

Heath wasn't fast enough, and Maggie claimed the single seat nearest Jake on the love seat.

"Ok," Jake started, "Don't interrupt. No one interrupt. Heath, you can interrupt. But no one else."

"Ok," Maggie said.

Peter nodded.

"This is going to..." Jake inhaled quickly and exhaled slowly. "This is going to freak you all out. I'm just going to get it out there. I'm the reincarnation of Jack Twist. Heath is the reincarnation of Ennis del Mar. We're in love, he's leaving Michelle, we're going to live together. I'm telling mom and dad as soon as I fly home tomorrow, I guess. And that is that."

Jake flicked his eyes up to Heath. "Did I leave anything out?"

Heath lowered his head and wished he could dissolve into the chair he was sitting in. When you said it like that it sure made them both sound mental.

Maggie took a moment to gather her jaw up off the floor. "Did I mistake the date? It doesn't look like April fool's day." She didn't sound amused.

Peter cleared his throat, sounding uncomfortable. "Can we, uh, can we ask questions now? Or talk, or whatever?"

"Sure, whatever," Jake mumbled, depression coloring his voice.

"So, you're gay, then?" Peter asked.

"Yeah, sure," Jake motioned with his arm, waving the question off. Heath didn't like the way this whole scene played out a little much like an inquisition of sorts.

"What do you mean, 'yeah, sure'?" Maggie's voice was biting.

"Whatever you want," Jake mumbled.

"What does that mean?" Heath sympathized with Maggie. She seemed genuinely concerned and confused both, and Jake was being less than forthcoming, but Maggie didn't understand how new this whole thing was to them as well.

Jake heaved a sigh, and it occurred to Heath that the man had had about as much as he could take for one day. But so had Heath, so when Heath thought of trying to answer Maggie's question himself, his words died on his lips when he realized he was no more sure of Jake's meaning than Maggie was. Maybe what they needed was a less intimidating set-up.

"Uh, maybe this would be easier to talk about over dinner?" Heath suggested. "We've had us an emotional day."

Maggie's eyes were trained on Jake, but she nodded solemnly, seeing the wisdom of Heath's words.

"How about Chinese?" Peter suggested, also watching Jake.

Jake looked up and caught Peter's eye then. Meaningful sentiment seemed to pass between the two of them, though Heath could not catch its meaning. Neither could he get a rein on the burning wave of jealousy that ran through him, leaving cold ashes in his wake. Jake wouldn't, would he? He wouldn't leave Heath alone... Jack wouldn't, Heath knew that with fervent certainly and clung to it. Maybe they were not entirely who they had been in any life, but something deep remained of their fictional selves. Ennis's need to posses Jack ran deep, but deeper ran Jack's tenaciousness when it came to love.

Peter called ahead, but it would be a couple hours, so Maggie put on The Who and they all pretended to relax in the stifling atmosphere of the room. In fact, as time wore on, it seemed that the tension that hung between them evened out. Maggie asked Jake some questions unrelated to him and Heath or his sexual orientation: about Atticus, his new running shoes, a recipe he'd wanted to try for wild boar and how it had worked out. They started talking about the baby, and Heath jumped in on that, warning them about Matilda's first days. He caught Jake looking on thoughtfully, but he continued giving to Maggie and Peter whatever he could to ease their passage into parenthood. It was rocky for everyone, but more for some than for others. At least they had a big, loving family. Heath could see that a million miles away as he watched Jake's eyes veritably glow with every mention of his niece or nephew.

Eventually, dinnertime rolled around, and they all got up to leave, all feeling much more at home. Jake was even giggling in low tones with Maggie. If Maggie was worried, which Heath couldn't doubt she still was, she was a good enough actress to conceal it well.

Yet, the explanations, discussions, head-on-confrontations, were still ahead and not behind. Heath knew, as he was sure everyone else did, that the hardest work was yet to come.

Jake certainly didn't mince words with Maggie and Peter. He just came right out and said it. I do wonder why he was being so vague about Peter's question of his sexual orientation though.
I sort of sympathized with Heath when he saw that look that passed between Jake and Peter. He was wondering if something had gone on between Jake and Peter. (I would love to hear more about that...) He was showing some jealousy over that thought, and I wonder if he will ask Jake about that when they are alone again.

This chapter was very tense, and I loved it. I'm looking forward to your next installment more than you know. : )

Bromas aparte, muchas gracias estoy disfrutando mucho leyendote.
P.D.: Sorry, evidentemente ni hablo ni leo ingles, este idioma anglosajón es incomprensible para mi, intento aprender algo, ...estoy en ello.
Todo lo hago con el traductor de internet. Gracias otra vez.

Nice quick update. You have been busy!

Jake is being very candid while telling Maggie & Peter about him/Jack and Heath/Ennis.

As frank as he was being he's not saying something. Being a bit vague about being gay and what's between him & Peter?

Looking forward to more...

When you said it like that it sure made them both sound mental.

Yeah, well, that´s what I thought when I first read the premise to this fic, since I´m not too keen on reincarnation, I´m such a non spiritual person ... But now I´ve wrapped my head around the idea and can tell Jake, Jack, Heath and Ennis apart, I really like it - it´s great to see them try and come to terms with their intermingling personalities dead or alive.
And telling their families - that´s just like "Can my invisible friend have dinner with us tonight?" Lovely! Clara

I'm Back but as Myself
I am back reading, and now feel caught up with Duality. I feel so bad for them in one way, but so happy, happy, happy that they get a second chance to make a sweet life together. (As sweet as any life can be)

I'm with Jack/Jake, I wonder how many iterations of love and passion and struggle they've had together?

This must be hard to write, but glad you've undertaken the effort.

This was a wonderful chapter. Jake blurting out his emergency news to Maggie and Peter was perfect, as was the ensuing tension and awkwardness. Love how Maggie is so worried about her little brother; so sweet. Particularly loved 'melancholy blue eyes' as a description for Jack Twist's beautiful eyes and the Ennis/Heath jealousy and possessiveness was spot on:

... well, at least he knew that melancholy blue, and it was an eye color that had never belonged to Jake....

Ennis's need to posses Jack ran deep, but deeper ran Jack's tenaciousness when it came to love.

Oh Jess - I am so happy to see new chapters to this story! I remember "kicking your ass" back in Bay City about this and you gave us that one chapter and then the long break once more. I was so excited when I saw this that I pulled out chapters 1-4 before I would let myself read anything new. I'm so glad I did - it brought it all back and got me right in the mood to move on!

I absolutely loved what Heath said to Michelle - the way he described it was just so perfect and made the whole thing seem so much clearer to me (the whole part about him thinking he is a reincarnation and has someone's memories and he's falling in love with the person that person was in love with) - some how it's just all making sense now. (I doubt Michelle felt that way though)!

I know you're gonna laugh when I tell you I read chapter 6 in the local barber shop when I took my son there for a haircut! OMG - I could not put the damn thing down so I brought it with me! I literally laughed out loud at Jake's "this is going to freak you all out" speech - I kinda just looked around where I was sitting thinking this is a bit of an HFIA? moment, isn't it??!! Oh well. Who cares. I love how he explained things even MORE than how Heath explained them!! So simple - to the point - "I'm the reincarnation of Jack Twist. Heath is the reincarnation of Ennis del Mar. We're in love, he's leaving Michelle, we're going to live together." -- And the rest. Really, this was priceless Jess!!! Okay, and further more, you had Maggie put on my all time freaking favorite band in the universe - THE WHO!!! How did that happen?? I was so excited (again - still in the damn barber shop - couldn't even jump up and down or call anyone)!!!

Seriously, though, Jess - this is so, so good. I don't know how you write this and keep it all straight but you do it and I'm just loving how you're doing it. I have to say one of my favorite parts of all was this: 'They weren't who they'd been before, not entirely. They truly were some combination'. That is just perfect. And it's probably why I like this story so much - because these guys are the combination of the four guys I am completely head over heels in love with, ya know? So it's like everything I love rolled into two. I don't know if I'm really making sense anymore but I just couldn't wait to get home and comment to you on this!!

I hope there is more in the works (and we don't have to wait 6 months)!!!

Thanks Girl!!

Lisa xoxo

just catching up on this story... i forgot how original and how good it is - bonus point for making the readers as confused as Jake & Jack and Heath and Ennis! :)

since you put the OS and RPS in the same blender, the biggest challenge is how to get the "two pairs" out in those words. Very interesting.

Damn near broke my heart when Jake (the reincarnated Jack) would think that Ennis would think Jack brought that on himself... *sobs*... I think that's exactly what would drive new-ennis to do make sure that this time Jack won't be left alone on the grieving plain with a broken heart. Although I don't really have total faith in this new-Ennis to achieve this, the "heath" part might be an obstacle? LOL

hope to see the next chapter soon.

HI! I just read 'Duality'. Excellent writing! Are there any chapters after #6? It didn't sound like the story was over, but I can't find anything more. Anyway, about your story, it is really unique. I have read so many Heath/Jake stories and VERY many Ennis/Jack stories, but nothing compared to this. It is really very good writing. Did you have problems trying to keep the names straight? LOL! Your imagination must really be something to come up with this kind of concept for a story. I really am amazed! //////// BTW--off of the story for a minute.......I see you live in St Paul. I live way north by Bemidji, In Bagley (Hwy 2). Very small world out there--isn't it? Do I need to be befriended to finish the story? (I just thought of that) If is, please write and let me know. Thanks so much again, for the wonderful story you are sharing here. Cat :)

That does sound mental indeed, Jake. ;p

It is now 2012 and I can't find any other chapters. :'( I really, really hope you'll finish this one day. It is sooo good. *sigh*
