Marriage

One after the other, always receiving or sending, writing or reading, inhaling or exhaling, and the border between: holding his breath, opening the mailbox and waiting for the next day, or not, for the answer, or not (but never, never not). March-November-April-October-March-October-April-November: the cold departing, cold arriving, cold departing again. As the migrating birds headed south and then north and then south and then north, so went the postcards, the truck, and his heart. It was a never-ending circle of actions that wound into one thing, malformed, but living and strong nonetheless. Their separate and difficult lives were one, no less difficult, in the ring of paper and seasons. This was their relationship, their marriage.

How Incredibly Sad. The waste of this great love they shared, gets me everytime.

This was so great - so sad, hurts me to read it cause it's so true - but it's brilliantly written. You've nailed it all in this short piece. Great job. S!

Thank you for the lovely compliment.

It's a never ending vicious circle. Very nicely written.

BTW, I love your little mood icons. Where can I get them?

Sandy

Thanks :)

Aha! I'm glad you asked. They're lovely, aren;t they? Yo can get them here.

It's all they have of each other. A few times a year for a week at a time, they are allowed to be together, and in between, they wait for that postcard from heaven telling them that they won't be alone for another brief time.
This is a sad piece. You feel sorry for what Jack and Ennis have to go through just to see one another for such a short time.
Thank you for this. : )

This was just beautiful, and heartbreaking as well. Loved the last line.

Beautiful. Never thought of their relationship like that but you got it right. All sorts of malformed relationships count as marriage- why not theirs.
I often wonder what it would have been like for them when they got old and too busted up for the mountains. Would it have ended or would they have eventually run away to the sun together?

Exactly. What a beautiful sentiment, really. Marriage, in a more abstract sense, means the joining of two things into one, so absolutely they were married.

And you have a fascinating plot bunny there. Have you though of writing it?

Thanks for reading this piece. Even though it was so short, it was really meaningful to me.

This really showcases the futility of their relationship for those long 20 years... wow. With the passing of the months and seasons, and therefore the years, their melancholy hopelessness simply intensified as they pushed their longing and "what if" feelings deeper and deeper.

A ring of paper and seasons, binding them in their marriage. Lovely work!!

Damn, that was hard to read, so true, and so eloquent.
The sadest part is that only one of them insisted that it had to be that way.
If only... *sniffle*.

I was just reading about police raids arresting gay men in Idaho, and about gay men turning other gay men over for some police protection in return, in the 60's and 70's, and even up to in NYC. I wonder if it actually didn't have to be that way?

Thanks for reading!

Marriage
Planetgal, you neatly summed up their relationship. A circle of hope and anguish repeated until no hope was left.

thanks

Well, I ventured to read it because of the warning ''no dead!Jack'', but... it is very sad all the same! Anyway, beautifully written, Jess!

Something more mundane: is it normal that if I click on ''previous'' it says ''forbidden''?
Bloody Jack Flint: Kohaku Hushrhye on August 31st, 2007 02:10 am (UTC)
I'm sorry it's so sad. I actually thought it was happier to think of the ways in which they were bound.

In my journal, yes, that would be normal :) It's also my personal journal, and the post before this, I think, was a friends-locked picspam of my dogs rough housing. If you just keep flipping back, you should come to more public stuff.
