Cisgender Privilege
The following showed up on my twitter feed:

Retweet if you have a heterosexual, cisgendered friend in your life that you love and accept unconditionally.

NO. Why do you suppose that non-passing transgendered people pretend to be cisgendered? Why do people of varying sexualities pretend to be heterosexual? There is an enormous social stigma related to being either homo/bi sexual or being transgendered. These are issues people lose family, jobs, and sometimes even their lives over. Trust me, heterosexual, cisgendered individuals don't need an outpouring of support for their gender and orientation. This world allows such individuals to be considered "normal" and "healthy". They have privilege that comes with being "normal" and "healthy". Consider that gender identity issues are still considered a mental disease, and until relatively recently, homosexuality was also considered a mental disorder. Heterosexuality and cisgender identity have never in the history of humankind, had such stigma placed on them.

I'm asking, if you see this message, don't retweet it. It shows a gross ignorance of both heterosexual privilege and cisgender privilege. 26% of surveyed transgender Americans have been fired from jobs for their gender non-conformity, and 41% of surveyed transgender Americans have attempted suicide (compared to 1.6% in the general population). And we're busy tweeting about how much we support cisgender individuals? I call foul.

Yeah.....that's bullshit (the tweet, not you). It almost sounds satirical, but knowing the Internet, it's not. Ugh

That's what I thought when I read it, like that the poster must have meant it sarcastically. Because. What.

People are so dumb, ugh.

I say let people tweet and retweet that as much as they want. It just saves you time by letting you know who the assholes are in advance.

I'm pleading total ignorance here but what does cisgender mean?

Also, you should make a similar tweet showing support for everyone or something and get your friends to retweet! I totally get where you're coming from with this post.

Thanks for the answer. I was serious and I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone since I was running out and wanted to post a comment before I left. It was speedier to ask in my comment. :)

As long as they're discreet about it, you know? I don't want to have to see their Normate expressions when I'm out in public.

In all seriousness, though, you would not believe the number of times I've had people say the word "cisgender" is insulting and unnecessary. There is not enough rage in my bones...

Well, duh - "cisgender" sounds so sissy. They prefer to be called "brogender".

Ugh. Hoping it started as a sarcastic thing.

Re: (cont)
no one has the energy to deal with all the ignorance and hate all the time. Srsly anyone who thinks that can go ... hm, idk what. Maybe they can bring me a martini.

I can only imagine that someone who knows what cisgendered means meant this as a sarcastic tweet. But I agree that it doesn't really help, once it's out into the wild, without a lot of context can be pretty problematic. OTOH maybe some people will learn the word cisgendered.

Yup. :) I used to have an internet acronym dictionary bookmarked but I don't seem to anymore. Hm.

I'm neither straight nor cis (I'm not trans either, I'm genderqueer), but this sounds like sarcasm to me? Like something that would be posted at lgbtlaughs. But, meh, it's still unnecessary, especially on twitter where it won't feel sarcastic to most people.
