The Horse and the Dragon
Title: The Horse and the Dragon
Fandom: None/Original
Rating: PG
Summary: Eight-stanza free verse, vaguely mythical, subtly modern. About love.

The Horse and the Dragon

I was Death
I rode a high, pale horse.

She claimed to be life--
Love rode a great dragon.

We came together and I
Thought us happy.

But when she rode away
She had the dragon,
The steed, and the sword

I was laid low in the sands.
In parched desert I was naked.
I had nothing left but my halved heart.

Love, it is said
Is stronger than death.

They do not say,
Neglect in the tale
That love is also crueler

This I know:
She'll come back to slay me.
