(Mostly) Not Remembered

A long time gone
Forgot
In winds of days blown by
Stirred by smells
But (mostly) not remembered

*~*~*~*

Lureen clipped the golden and pearl earring into place. The pearls hung in levels, and she shook her head to watch them shiver. It wouldn't be a church wedding, but a courtroom was just as good all things considered. Wished her daddy could have lived to see it.

*~*~*~*

Bob shuffled the papers into the file cabinet with a nod. "Was that all right?" he asked the general manager, Phil. Phil nodded and clapped Bobby on the back. Bob smiled in young-man pride. There could be a raise in his future now that he was allowed to do financing, and if he got more money he might be able to afford a diamond ring for Molly.

*~*~*~*

John worried over the cattle this winter. Feed prices rising. Ranch wasn't getting easier to run. Ruth wanted him to rent or sell, but he'd hold on long as he could.

*~*~*~*

The cold worried into her bones and made the the cross stitch too hard, so she'd gone to knitting instead. Still hurt, but not as bad. Nell's youngest was expecting. Ruth smiled to think of the baby boy or girl while she knitted a yellow blanket. She'd give it over to Nell Sunday at church.

*~*~*~*

Randall stroked Terry's back. Terry was warm and smelled like woods in winter, peppered all over with course, black hair. Randall loved to run his face over that fur, feel it on his skin and smell the woods. Terry made a waking noise and perked up, and Randall smiled to know what would come next.

*~*~*~*

He went from working for Jim Morena by day to Jim Beam by night, and no time for thoughts much in between. Worked out for all involved. Most days he forgot. Made himself believe that he forget, at any rate. Just a cowhand on a hard-worked ranch, living day-to-day.

But sometimes he'd sober up too quick or stop to watch the sun touch distant flint-topped peaks before settling for the day. His breath caught in his throat 'cause he knew he would not ever forget. The silent thing he never thought came with him like a ghost through every hour.

His eyes watered every time. Every time he understood that one else had reason to remember. No one else had owned the thing he'd owned. Now no one ever would.

Oh, that hurts. Because no one else...and only Ennis...guh. You always slay me.

this is so sad
what a waste of a beautiful, hopeful life
in the end there is only Ennis left- only ever Ennis

Thanks for the kind comment :)

It's a shame that even Jack's own parents seemed to forget that he even existed. But Ennis will never forget his Jack, until the day he dies and joins his Rodeo.
Sad.

Yeah, it is sad, and I'm not sure why I saw it that way, but I easily could. Maybe because Jack lived so far away anyway. Thank you for reading!

That was heartbreaking...because it sounded so plausible. One of my biggest frustrations related to the story/movie is that no one in his life ever appreciated Jack as much as he deserved. Though Ennis probably did, he couldn't give Jack what he deserved, either, so it amounted to almost the same thing.

Exactly how I feel as well *hugs*

Jeesus!! This one really hurts. How very sad that Jack traveled through his too short life untouched by, and untouching, those people who had professed to be his friends and family.
Only Ennis remembers the man he fell in love with so many years ago. Far too late now for either of them. Tragic!!
But beautiful.
Thanks. Carole

So sad and heartbreaking. No one loved Jack as Ennis did. Thanks for sharing. Ursel

So true, no one did. I hope Jack realizes. Thanks for reading!

Thanks, Jess. Who is Nell, though?

I have a request. Your stuff is in 8 point sans serif type gray. Would it be possible to make it more readable by making the type black, making it a bit bigger, or by using a serif type? I am old. Thanks!

hi jmp -- try doing what i do: go to the view pull down menu in your browser's menu bar and make the text bigger yourself. i do that all the time, but mostly i'm making the text smaller. :) i don't know about the font's color, however. you might want to try changing your settings in LJ so you read your friends pages in your own style.

um, i *think* Nell is simply somebody that Ruth is thinking of, somebody with whom she can share the joy of life, because she can't do that any longer with her own son.

jess --- this story was just beautiful. sparse, yet rich; little glimpses, beautifully done. thank you so much, you always amaze!

Thank you so much Jimmy, and for answering jmp's questions, too. You always impress me with your own writing, so compliments from you make me feel woozy ^^

Hi! I'm glad gnashsang commented to you. You do have several options when it comes to viewing any LJ. after the #####.html you can add ?style=mine or ?style=light to see a version that might be easier for you to read. I don't want to change the format here because behind the scenes I use this journal for much, much more than fanfic. It's actually my personal and friend's journal and s I read it every ten minutes, and I like the gentler colors that don't stress my eyes.

And Jimmy's also right about who Nell is-- just some friends of Jack's mom. It's not really important who she is, just that she's not thinking of Jack, but she;s sort of moved on with her life.

Thanks for reading!

Very lovely. The one who really cared is the one who really misses his own special thing....him.

His breath caught in his throat 'cause he knew he would not ever forget....

His eyes watered every time. Every time he understood that no one else had reason to remember. No one else had owned the thing he'd owned. Now no one ever would.
