Comin' With Me

First when I moved here, I was free, so free, bud, 'cause there wasn't no memories of you here. Left you in a box-- those shirts. Kept that all locked up, 'cause it was a home where I didn't feel that... that thing I feel when I think of you. Didn't have to be reminded all a time. Could just pretend you never was, and that was fine. Was a relief.

'Til one day I was sorting stock on the windward side of a slope when a little squall brewed up. I looked 'round me, saw the sky and its blue, the rain. Rain always was the only way I got to feel your tears, 'cause you didn't show them to me, and I got to say I didn't want a see them neither. But I always liked the feel of the rain.

I forgot my own name when I heard the wind exhale yours that day. Remember that time up by Bristol Peak when that wind come up on us, and-- well, you remember. You was there.

I'd decided it was easier to forget you, but what I'd done forgot was how beautiful life was with you. If I got to live in pain remembering that thing I never let myself look on and can't see no more, well, at least I got the memory still.

So I hung those shirts up in Junior's place and spoke your name aloud. 'Cause wherever I am goin', I want you comin' with me, Jack.

Ennis is just waiting to join Jack now. He can no longer try to forget the only man he ever loved.
This was sad but nice. Thank you for posting it. :)

That was poetic. Beautiful sense of what it's like to be afraid of facing loss and what happens when you finally embrace it.

Thanks so much.

OK, I am somewhat freaked out! Is there a brain-wave connection between us. I finished about a half hour ago a review of three Dead!Jack drabbles that I was going to post to SD, I will shortly, but I focused on one the exact same things you talk about here -

If I got to live in pain remembering that thing I never let myself look on and can't see no more, well, at least I got the memory still.

This is how I see Ennis when asking why he puts himself through the pain, because it helps him to remember.

Lovely, Jess,

Cheers, Ted

That's kind of cool! I remember I got the idea from a song, but I can't even recall the song any more. I guess I'll be meeting you in two weeks! Take care.

Very melancholy, but I liked that Ennis spoke Jack's name aloud and always will bring him with him, wherever he goes. I guess when we lose someone, we have a choice of what to do with our memories, mourn or remember the joy. Looks like Ennis is doing a bit of both here.

Very sad but it captures the feelings of "old" Ennis perfectly.

This was so sad. This line really did me in: //Rain always was the only way I got to feel your tears, 'cause you didn't show them to me, and I got to say I didn't want a see them neither. But I always liked the feel of the rain.// Beautiful piece.

Is it poor etiquette
to comment on something you beta'd? Because I really, really love the finished version, Jess.:-)

Re: Is it poor etiquette
I always comment on things I beta'd! I'm glad you liked this final version. I changed quite a few things, but mostly because I sat back and meditated a little bit on older Ennis, finding his voice.

I also transcribed/edited a good but of LOTTD tonight :)

He needed a livetime to sort his feelings out-oh Ennis.
Beautiful writing
